Too Ill to Write?

I’ve finally recuperated from an illness that lasted nearly a week. It wasn’t anything serious, except I think I caught a couple minor diseases at the same time. And for nearly a week, I did nothing productive in terms of writing. I didn’t add a single word to my new MS. I sent no new queries. I wasn’t so sick I couldn’t read (That’s the worst!), so I managed to knock out five or so novels. And even though I like to call reading novels “doing research,” I’d be seriously kidding myself if I believed I was making any kind of progress on a writing career while lounging around reading fun books for a week.

Of course, I was sick, so I don’t feel guilty about it or anything. I’m just wondering why I was healthy enough to read, write email, and check Facebook, but didn’t feel up to writing, querying, and so forth. I suspect it has to do with the mental energy involved, and how I didn’t have any. Plus it’s not like I had any deadlines I had to make. I have to get food on the table for hungry kids no matter how ill I feel (Thank goodness they like PB&J!), but I don’t have to get another chapter written.

I’m curious what other writers do. Do you write even when you’re feeling under the weather?

  1. oh so sorry my dear Kathleen!!! I hope you feel better now?
It is funny how when we are sick we cannot do anything! not even reading!
Well, take it easy and come back soon:)
    Kisses

  2. Thanks, Mirella! I am all better now, so I don’t have any excuses not to be productive!

    Take care!

  3. When I don’t feel well physically, I can’t focus on my writing. Many people say to write no matter what, but for me it’s a waste of time and energy. Guess that’s why I’m still not ready to submit my novel. :(

    • I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who feels that way. I just felt like I wasn’t thinking straight, so I didn’t even try it.

  4. I just took two days off because I had to go out of town to deal with a family emergency. I took my laptop with me, but I couldn’t get into the right head space; my creative energy was just not there. I started getting back on track yesterday, but only met my word goal by half.

That seems typical for me. If I miss more than a day I seem to need to ease back up to my word count goal level. That’s why I try to not have to take days off.

    • I can see having a lot of problems writing if I were out of town for a family emergency. I’m wondering how I’ll do during my vacations this summer.

  5. Glad you’re feeling better! I think when you’re sick it’s 100% permissable to just do what you feel up to doing. If your head is a cloudy mess and you can barely string a sentence together, it’s probably better not to force yourself to write. If you feel like writing would be a good distraction from feeling icky, more power to you!

I don’t subscribe to the “write no matter what” mentality–there are times when you need a break. If you’d call in sick to work, call in sick to your computer. If you need a mental health day, take it. If writing makes you feel better and helps you ignore your illness, though, go for it!

    • I don’t do the “write no matter what” thing either, but it was hard to get back into it. I had to reread a lot to get back into the flow of my WIP, and now I’m feeling easily distracted. There’s just so much going on this time of year!

  6. Not that I am a writer my blog and fiction for myself (well, I write but I am not working on a novel right now).. but when I am sick I am a hopeless case. I can’t do a thing except lay in bed and read. I was sick recently too, for a week, and that’s all I did.. I had a university essay due so I worked on that near the end of the week (no choice) but I think it was pretty bad.. lol… not looking forward to receiving my grade for that one!

Anyway, point is, when I am sick I am whiny and grumpy and can’t do a thing. Thank god I don’t have children. They would starve.

    • Ok, that was supposed to be “Not that I am a writer, except for my blog and writing fiction for myself” – talk about sickness and my brain gets all muddled!!

      • LOL. That’s bad when even the thought of sickness gets your brain muddled. :)

  7. I get muddled more than I would like to admit. If I wasn’t so young, I would blame it on old age ;) Unfortunately I have no excuse.

  8. How are you feeling Kathleen? better?
Have a great day my friend :)
    Mirella

    • Hi Mirella,
I’m all better. You’re so sweet to ask! I’m just super busy all of a sudden.

  9. Okay, I’m a bit behind on my blog friends. I’m glad you’re feeling better. I had a similar experience with my move over the last few weeks. Just keeping on top of all the details, being crammed together with the family, and house hunting, sapped my creative energy completely.

Sometimes, the juice just isn’t there. As long as we don’t use that as a perpetual excuse, it’s okay to listen to our bodies.

    Good luck with the writing!

    • Thanks, Gwen, for taking the time to visit even when you’re so busy! Summer in general is sapping my creative energy right now… or at least my time!
